Services

The conservation and restoration attends to the needs of an artwork as it suffered from environmental degradation, physical damage, or other problems, such as an aged varnish that obscures the image it was meant to protect. My objectives are to address these problems, help make the artwork last well into the future, and respect the artist’s original vision, the history of the object, and it’s meaning.

In serving clients, I first analyse the artwork and then provide a plan for the object’s conservation and restoration. As well as the work on the object itself, I provide a written documemt describing my research, analysis, and a condition report.

Preventive Conservation

Preventive conservation includes developing environmental guidelines, photographic and written documentation, condition report, analysis and identifications, preparing an emergency response plan for such disasters as fire or flood.

Curative Conservation

Curative conservation includes decontamination of mould and insects, cleaning, repairing tears, removing deformations, consolidation, reinforcing the paint support.

Restoration

Restoration includes removing overpaints, lightening of varnish, aesthetic reintegration (such as filling the gaps and retouching).

On-Site Work

In 2019, I had the opportunity to work on the restoration of the ceiling in Gozo's Cathedral in Malta with the team Prevarti-Salvarti. The oil painting on canvas, attached to the ceiling, depicts a trompe l'oeil of a dome. The 16-foot canvas had become deformed due to a high humidity levels, causing the oil paint layer to become porous over time. It was necessary to consolidate the paint layer to prevent loss of the representation.

Reproductions

I can make reproductions of famous works, such as the copy of Antoine Watteau’s Nymphe et Satyre, pictured above. If you wish to learn the techniques of artists such as Titian, Watteau and Manet, I can teach them.
